Draper Street
We often say that it all began in Draper Street, which is true of the style of practice which ultimately evolved into apple tree medical. The foundation however was laid a long time before that when a 30 something year old chap called Jim Watson started a practice in Cairns in the 1970's. Over the next 30 years or so year Dr Watson provided a medical service to a great many of Cairns residents. Jim's work ethic was legendary and he continued to work 6 days a week right up to the day he retired.
Dr Liz Chappel bought Jim's practice in Sept 2004. Almost immediately there was a need to move the practice as the building it was occupying was earmarked for redevelopement. In March 2005 we relocated to an amazing building in Draper Street.
The building is over 100 years old and part of Cairns history. Walking in to Draper Street is like walking into someones home, an environment we believe compliments the style of medicine we try to practice.

Smithfield
Smithfield was our first purpose built surgery and is something of a formal representation of the homely feel that we had sought in Draper street.
The biggest challenge during the design process was to translate the warmth of a Queenslander to a shopping centre environment. The design of Smithfield, we believe, has achieved that, thanks largely to Stuart & Bonni of Myriad Design and their fantastic vision for what could be achieved. The blend of timber features and modern furniture has created an surprising eclectic sanctuary from the outside world.
